Remembering & Honoring a Fierce Activist & Dedicated Teammate
A year ago today, we lost a loyal friend, an ardent advocate for the mission of our CIL, as well as a fierce activist for disability rights. I want to take this time to honor Steve Fristoe’s life and tremendous contributions to the Disability Rights Movement.
Steve passed away February 3, 2021, at age 61. At the time of his death, Steve was a member of Arizona ADAPT and employed by Direct Advocacy & Resource Center as an Independent Living Advocate and Certified Health Coach. Prior to working at Direct, Steve served as a member of the Board of Directors (and was involved in hiring me ).
Steve also worked for two other CILs and participated in ADAPT in Illinois, his home state. He often expressed honor in working alongside other “warriors” who stand up and fight for the rights of our community.
Steve maintained an absolute passion for the possible – always. Devoted to supporting others in achieving their goals, Steve was an experience peer mentor and skills trainer, as well as relentless cheerleader. And he did it all with a smile and unfathomable kindness.
As the pandemic forced the center’s work to go virtual, Steve quickly adapted to ensure a seamless transition for participants with no service interruption. For example, he organized “ingredient boxes” that were delivered to participant’s homes to facilitate virtual/Zoom, hands-on Cooking & Nutrition classes.
In his free time, Steve taught adaptive martial arts classes. He got involved in martial arts as a child, held over 22 Tenth degree black belts, and honored all disciplines of Martial Arts. As his son noted, Steve was “beast!”
I also am personally honored – and super proud– to have taken Steve to his first National ADAPT action. He truly was a badass with the “power of ADAPT.”
Our hearts and lives are richer for having shared the path with Steve Fristoe for the time that we had. Rest in peace and power dear friend!
Peace,
